I own a M1 13" and a 2019 16" i9, and I go back and forth. ![]() The 2019 16" is a pretty useful rig on Monterey 12.3 or higher, as a dGPU power bug was fixed in 12.3, which helped the heat issue a bit. Don't expect the 2019 16" to be a gaming rig, and expect it to run hot like all Intel machines of the time. The M1 will outperform the 2019 16" in every way, save the M1 Air and 13" M1 MBP in heavy graphics tasks - the 5500m or higher in the 16" is basically a tie with the M1 integrated graphics, in my experience. The 16" is powerful enough for all school tasks, without question. ![]() It has to run the ARM versions, which may not do what you need. The M1 is fabulous - but it will not run a real copy of x86 OSes. Some things to consider before reading all the 'M1 or nothing' comments that come with a question like yours: The 2019 16" Intel will run Parallels hosting a real x86 copy of Windows and/or Linux, which could be quite useful in CS.
